The South Carolina Senate just passed a dangerous, anti-transgender healthcare bill: H. 4624, which bans medically necessary healthcare for transgender youth, prevents Medicaid and state health insurance plans from covering gender-affirming care, and requires staff to “out” transgender students – among other harmful provisions in the bill. The bill is awaiting final concurrence in the House, and if it passes and receives Governor McMaster’s signature, it will take effect immediately. While we hope House lawmakers do the right thing and stop this bill, we want to make sure families of trans youth and trans adults have the information and support to continue care if it goes into effect this week.
We know that families have questions about this legislation and what it means for the future. That’s why on Wednesday, May 8th at 4:00 PM Eastern, Campaign for Southern Equality, We Are Family, Harriet Hancock Center, Uplift Outreach Center, Human Rights Campaign, Alliance for Full Acceptance, and other partners will be hosting a virtual event focused on helping families understand the legislation and navigate access to gender-affirming care, while offering community support and answering questions.
At the event, we’ll discuss resources available, including an overview of the new law, ways you can take action, and resources that are available for both trans youth and adults.
