2016 conference keynote – LGBT rights and criminal justice

January 19, 2016 in Hometown Organizing by Aaron Sarver

We’re very excited to announce our keynote for the 2016 LGBT* in the South conference – a panel on criminal justice and LGBTQ issues featuring an amazing lineup of leaders.

Urvashi Vaid of The Vaid Group, Shaena Johnson from BreakOUT!, and Nayely Perez-Huerta of the Southeast Immigrant Rights Network (SEIRN) will share the stage for a keynote panel moderated by facilitator Craig White. Together, they’ll offer analysis, policy recommendations, stories, and lessons learned from organizing and lived experience.

At a vital time in our national conversation about criminal justice reform, this keynote plenary will bring this issue home to the South and the lives of LGBT* Southerners.Panelists will discuss policy recommendations to address discriminatory practices for LGBT* prisoners and immigrants in detention; decriminalize HIV; and prevent youth and adults from becoming involved in the criminal justice system.

Beyond this keynote panel, there will be 35 terrific workshops at the 2016 LGBT* in the South conference, most of them led by Southern organizers and service providers.

Conference registration is open and I hope you’ll register now to join us in Asheville from March 18 to 20th.

Through workshops, plenaries and grassroots caucuses, the conference is a unique space for dialogue, learning, and strategy sharing about emerging LGBT* issues in the South. The conference offers training, networking opportunities and direct support to LGBT* Southern grassroots leaders and to practitioners across disciplines who serve our community. Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit is also available for NC attorneys.

Keeping the conference affordable for Southern students and activists is a top priority so we also have conference scholarships available to those in need.

The registration fee ranges from just $20 to $250 depending on whether you’re a student, organizer or attorney.
