The Campaign for Southern Equality is excited to announce the 2023 Southern Equality Studios (SES) Artist in Residence program. We are accepting applications for this 6-month residency, which includes approximately 12 hours/work each week and which pays a total stipend of $6,500 with additional funding for materials and professional development.

GOALS
This residency is guided by the belief that the arts are a catalyst and force for advancing LGBTQ lived and legal equality in the South. The goals of this residency include supporting the artistic and professional development of LGBTQ artists in this South, with an emphasis on BIPOC, TGNC, and rural artists. This includes opportunities to increase visibility, and improve access to funding and exhibition opportunities for artists, and creating work which represents or otherwise amplifies the voices of LGBTQ people in the South.
Structure/Scope
The Artist in Residence will work at CSE approximately 12 hours/week and will utilize this time to:
- Engage in the planning and implementation of Southern Equality Studios program; prioritized projects include: Contributing to the Queer Artist Meetup; coordinating a community-facing exhibition of work, assisting in art workshops, interviews and studio visits conducted with queer creatives in the South;
- Contribute graphics or creative content to CSE’s communications program, including for social media content;
- Develop a new art project related to themes of the residency;
- Participate in Equity and Healing and Resilience activities with staff and attend weekly staff meetings as they choose.
Compensation
The 2023 SES Residency will run from May 30 until late November. A total stipend of $6,500 for 6 months based on approximately 12 hours of engagement per week.
- This stipend is intended to cover the Resident’s time spent with the CSE team, their continued involvement with SES projects and any graphic design or creative content they contribute for CSE programs and initiatives; stipend is based on an estimated 12 hours per week
- Resident will receive a $250 stipend for professional development activities;
- Resident will be reimbursed for residency-related travel;
- Studio supplies and printing costs will be covered by SES budget and require pre-approval;
- SES event costs (food, rentals, marketing, honoraria) must be pre-approved and will be covered by the SES general budget.
Location
The Resident will have access to office space at CSE in Asheville, NC,,and may work remotely as desired.
Supervision/Support
The Resident will be supervised by Liz Williams, Creative Director, Southern Equality Studios.
