The UNC School of Government has some good news for equality advocates in North Carolina; Diane Juffras, Associate Professor of Public Law and Government at the school has authored a 34-page brief that says, “In my opinion, Amendment One does not take away the authority of North Carolina local government employers to offer domestic partner benefits.” You can read more about the brief at The Independent Weekly.
If you’re interested in this positive development, please join us for a free legal workshop hosted by CSE titled, “What Amendment One Means for You and Your Family,” which will be held in Asheville on Wednesday, July 11 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. The purpose of the workshop is to provide clear, accessible information to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals regarding their legal rights now that Amendment One has gone into effect. The workshop will be led by Asheville-based attorneys Meghann Burke and Diane Walton and will take place at the First Congregational United Church of Christ at 20 Oak Street in Asheville. Free childcare will be provided during the event.
Visit our Community Law Workshops page to find info on other “What Amendment One Means for You and Your Family” workshops that CSE is sponsoring across North Carolina this summer and fall.
And you can also check out our Amendment One & Your Rights (NC) webpage, which serves as a clearinghouse for Amendment One information.
