It’s difficult to watch so many clinics overcomplying with the Trump Administration’s Executive Order targeting trans youth healthcare by shuttering their services for young transgender patients. As of this week, multiple clinics in Arizona, Illinois, California, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C. have announced that they will stop providing gender-affirming to trans youth under 19, overcomplying with the anti-trans Executive Order and further reducing access to care that is challenging to access in the first place. Many families based in these access states – as well as those who traveled from states with bans for care from these clinics – are scrambling to find new providers for this life-saving medical care. In response, some providers are stepping up to open their doors to these families. Families of transgender youth impacted by clinic closures can now access resources from the Trans Youth Emergency Project – click here to navigate directly to the intake form for support. Whether you live in a ban state or an access state, you can get support.
While we’re disappointed to see these closures happen in “safe states” where care remains legal, we remain steadfast in our mission: no young person should be denied the medically necessary care they need to thrive due to political attacks. Our Trans Youth Emergency Project is here to help. For over two years, we have responded to the rise of state bans on gender-affirming care by offering families patient navigation to new providers, travel grants to help them get to their appointments, and wellness support to foster resilience in these difficult times. Now, we will be providing families impacted by gender-affirming care clinic closures key resources to ensure they can continue accessing life-saving care despite political barriers. Families of transgender youth can now access the following resources:
Patient Navigation
The Trans Youth Emergency Project helps families understand their options for continuing care with providers that are not impacted by state or federal restrictions, including referrals to medical providers.
One-Time Travel Grant to Relocate Care
The Trans Youth Emergency Project is offering one-time relocation of care travel grants to families of transgender youth, and transgender 18 year olds, who live in access states and who are forced to relocate their care due to a clinic closure. These $500 grants are for offsetting the cost of traveling to a new provider, and will only be administered to a parent or legal guardian of a transgender young person or a transgender young person who is 18 years old.
Renewable Travel Grants For States with Bans
The Trans Youth Emergency Project is offering continuous support for families living in ban states and losing access to care due to a clinic closure – fill out our intake form and enroll in our program to receive renewable travel grants of $500.
An Ecosystem of Care
The Trans Youth Emergency Project provides healing and resilience resources including workshops, toolkits, and a regular podcast centering trans rights called the Trans Cookout. We also host a monthly parent support group for families helping children navigate these impossibly complex bans – click here to sign up for the next session.
