Resources for Families of Trans Youth in Florida

A ban on gender-affirming care has passed in Florida and is currently in effect. The 2023 law, SB254, prohibits gender-affirming care in Florida for people under the age of 18, including puberty blockers, gender-affirming hormone therapy, and surgery.

Youth who began receiving gender-affirming care prior to the law’s most recent effective date (August 26, 2024) can continue legally accessing gender-affirming care in Florida. We encourage you to reach out to your provider for the most accurate guidance on whether your child will be able to continue accessing care in Florida.

The law does not restrict or ban youth from accessing mental health care, and youth and their families would also be able to travel to access care in other states where gender-affirming care has not been restricted.

SB254 has additional components impacting trans adults, including a provision that requires hormone therapy to be prescribed by a physician, rather than a nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or certified nurse midwife.

The Campaign for Southern Equality, Equality Florida, and Southern Legal Counsel are working with partners across Florida to provide resources and information to impacted families. Click here to learn more about the Trans Youth Emergency Project.
