In Georgia, SB140, a law that restricts initiating certain gender-affirming healthcare in Georgia for people under the age of 18 is currently in effect. This means that youth under the age of 18 cannot initiate gender-affirming hormone therapy or surgery. This law does not restrict care that is already initiated; youth that have started hormone therapy before July 1, 2023 will be able to continue receiving treatment.
Youth can still access mental health care, which is not restricted or banned by this law. Youth and their families may also travel to access care in other states where gender-affirming care has not been restricted.
The Campaign for Southern Equality is working with partners across Georgia, including Georgia Equality, to provide resources and information to impacted families. Click here to learn more about the Trans Youth Emergency Project.
Resource Guide for Those Impacted by SB140
We know this is a very challenging time filled with many questions. The Campaign for Southern Equality, Georgia Equality, and other partners have developed a resource guide with up-to-date information and concrete resources about the law and how families can get support.
Digital Toolkit to Spread the Word
It is critical that we get the word out to families and young people about resources that are available, including support identifying in-state and out-of-state care and emergency funding. Thank you for helping to share information with your networks. Please use these templates to share information with your email lists, social media networks, and in-person community spaces.
