August 29, 2013 in We Do Campaign by Jasmine Beach-Ferrara

L and Kristin

On Friday, August, 30, 2013, Kristin Hedin and L Rankin, residents of Forsyth County, North Carolina, will request a marriage license at their local Register of Deeds’ office as the WE DO Campaign continues to grow across the South. In this stage of the WE DO Campaign, we are seeking a local elected official in the South who will grant a marriage license to a LGBT couple as an act of conscience.

Together for 3 years, Kristin and L are seeking a marriage license because they wish to have their relationship recognized by their community and government. Despite a state ban on same-sex marriage, they will ask the Forsyth County Register of Deeds Office to issue licenses as an act of conscience. You can send Kristin and L a message of support here and read their letter to the Forsyth County Register of Deeds below.

August 2013

Dear Mr. C. Norman Holleman,

My name is L Rankin and I have been in a loving, committed relationship with my partner, Kristin Hedin for more than three years. We live in Winston Salem. When we met, we were both looking for someone who believed in the same values, who cherished life and who had arrived at a point in which to share deep love with someone.  It was an instant connection and over the years, we have fallen more deeply in love. We live each day loving each other more than the day before. There have been ups and downs of course as in any relationship and it is through those times where we know we are meant to be together because we weather the storms as well as celebrate in the triumphs. I asked her to marry me last June even though the state of North Carolina does not recognize same sex marriages. I asked her because in the deepest part of my soul I knew I had found the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. Our state doesn’t believe that we should get married, but our friends and families do and that means the world to us. We have planned a wedding for Oct 4th, 2014. It is far away partly to plan but more importantly to see if North Carolina will change its perceptions on how marriage should be defined.

We are asking you, Mr. Holleman to be our voice this Friday, August 30th at 8:30 a.m. as we will be coming to the Register of Deeds Office to request a marriage license and for you to issue this license to us because it is the right thing to do. We ask you to think about the meaning of love, of sharing life with another human being. Kristin and I are not asking to be special, we are asking to be included in receiving the rights and benefits that every loving, committed couple should receive. Amendment One threatens these rights every single day and leaves us feeling insecure when it comes to protection to the fullest extent of the law.

Thank you for reading this letter. If it helps in some small way to help your office change its perception of what love and marriage mean then that is all we ask for. We are deeply appreciative of your time.

Sincerely,
L Rankin and Kristin Hedin
