SB49 is a law that restricts gender-affirming healthcare in Missouri for transgender youth. Under this law, gender-affirming surgery, hormone therapy, and puberty delaying medications are inaccessible in Missouri for trans people until they turn 18. There is an exception for trans youth who began gender-affirming hormones or puberty blockers prior to the law’s implementation on August 28, 2023 – but functionally, many providers have stopped providing care for all patients. The law is currently in effect.
Youth can still access mental health care, which is not restricted or banned by this law. Youth and their families may also travel to access care in other states where gender-affirming care has not been restricted.
The Campaign for Southern Equality, PROMO, The GLO Center, and TransParent are working with partners across Missouri to provide resources and information to affected families. Click here to learn more about the Trans Youth Emergency Project.
