Good evening, I’m [INTRODUCE YOURSELF]. It’s important that all kids feel like our schools and classrooms are places where they belong and can feel safe, so they can learn and grow. Because of this, I want to use my time to talk about what gender inclusion in classrooms actually means and why it’s important.
Gender inclusion means maximizing kids’ choices, instead of limiting them based on their gender or sex. For example, this could mean giving kids more choice about what toys they play with or what clothes they wear. It also could mean avoiding making assumptions or putting kids into categories based on their gender or sex.
This is important because gender inclusion lets kids explore what they really like and who they are. Having classrooms that are gender inclusive makes kids more self confident and more accepting of differences.
Gender inclusive strategies in the classroom include:
- Inclusive language: Instead of saying “girls and boys” try saying “everyone” or “friends”
- Inclusive grouping: Putting students in groups in ways that are not focused on gender. Instead of separating boys and girls, separate them based on their favorite color, favorite animal, or in other creative ways.
- Displays: Have pictures in your classroom that display people of different gender identities in a range of careers to demonstrate achievement across gender identities.
- Role Modeling: Supporting inclusion in your classroom by addressing gender stereotyping as it occurs. If comments are made, that’s an opportunity to talk about the importance of showing respect.
- Books: Read books that challenge the gender binary and those that include diverse characters or are written by diverse authors.
Gender inclusion in the classroom supports the success of all students and empowers diverse educators. In classrooms that are more gender inclusive, students are provided a safe space where they feel valued and respected as they explore who they are.
