Romeo Loves Juliet, A Modern Love Story

October 16, 2012 in Events by Jasmine Beach-Ferrara

Romeo Loves Juliet, A Modern Love Story by William Shakespeare
November 8-18, 2012 at The BeBe Theatre in Asheville, N.C.
The Bard’s Classic love story, Romeo and Juliet, with a slightly different orientation.

The Asheville-based Different Strokes! Performing Arts Collective has generously announced they will donate a portion of the proceeds from the upcoming production of “Romeo Loves Juliet: A Modern Love Story,” to the Campaign for Southern Equality. The play will be performed from November 8-17 at the BeBe Theatre located at 20 Commerce St. in downtown Asheville.

In “Romeo Loves Juliet,” the main characters are both women, and the genders of several other characters have been flipped as well. For the most part, Shakespeare’s story has been kept intact, allowing for a new interpretation of his classic tale.

“’Romeo Loves Juliet’ was selected in direct response to North Carolina’s Amendment 1, California’s Proposition 8 and other laws that state unconstitutionally that only marriage between a man and a woman

is valid or recognized,” said Stephanie Hickling Beckman, managing artistic director of Different Strokes!
“In keeping with Shakespeare’s underlying story of forbidden love and our commitment to community
support, what seems more forbidden or controversial in this day and age than gay marriage?

Performances will be at Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and$12 for students and seniors when purchased in advance at www.differentstrokesavl.com; $18 for adults and $15 for students and seniors when purchased at the door.
