As everyone should be aware of at this point, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the Prop 8 and DOMA cases.
A NY Times article provides an overview of the cases:
“The suit argued that California voters had violated the federal Constitution the previous year when they overrode a decision of the state’s Supreme Court allowing same-sex marriages.”
“The second case the court agreed to hear, United States v. Windsor, No. 12-307, challenges a part of the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996. Section 3 of the law defines marriage as between only a man and a woman for the purposes of more than 1,000 federal laws and programs.”
Meghann K. Burke, Attorney at Cogburn & Brazil, P.A. in Asheville, NC and Campaign for Southern Equality Legal Team Leader has penned a summary of the cases and what’s a stake. You can download a PDF of her analysis here.
SCOTUSblog is a great resource to follow for speculation and analysis on both of these cases and http://www.prop8trialtracker.com/ is an in-depth resource for that case.
