Today, four couples participated in the WE DO Campaign. Three of the couples – Brenda and Carol, Amy and Lauren, and Amy and Luz – requested licenses from the Buncombe County Register of Deeds Office. They were, of course, denied these licenses due to a North Carolina law that prohibits marriage equality.
B. and S., who are legally married in six states and the District of Columbia successfully recorded their Massachusetts marriage license with the Register of Deeds. While recording their license does not give their relationship legal recognition in North Carolina, their action, along with those who requested licenses, sends a powerful message that laws denying marriage equality are harmful and unjust.
The four couples were joined by 20 supporters, including family members, friends, community members, and clergy. Clergy members present were Rev. Joe Hoffman and Rev. Shannon Spencer of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Asheville, Rev. Amanda Hendler-Voss of Land of the Sky United Church of Christ in Asheville, and Rev. Mahan Siler.
