In its second day, the WE DO Campaign involved two couples requesting marriage licenses from the Buncombe County Register of Deeds. Due to North Carolina’s state law prohibiting same-sex marriage, these couples, Nancy and Jill and Cindy and Gaby, were denied licenses. The couples were supported by six community members, including Rev. Joe Hoffman, Rev. Todd Donatelli, Craig White of the Center for Participatory Change, and Monroe Gilmore of Western North Carolina Citizens For An End To Institutional Bigotry.
You can read more about Cindy and Gaby’s story here. LGBT couples will continue to request marriage licenses in Asheville, NC through October 14, 2011. Stay tuned for an update and photos from tomorrow’s action.
