On the third day of the WE DO Campaign, three couples requested marriage licenses from the Buncombe County Register of Deeds. Due to North Carolina’s state law prohibiting marriage equality, these couples – Angie and Jan, Becky and Ginger, and Gwen and Susie – were denied licenses. The purpose of the WE DO Campaign is to call for full equality for LGBT people and to resist unjust laws.
The couples were supported by community members including Milly Morrow, a minister at All Souls Cathedral, and Monroe Gilmore of Western North Carolina Citizens For An End To Institutional Bigotry.
You can read more about participating couples’ stories here. Since the WE DO Campaign launched on October 3, eight couples have been denied licenses. LGBT couples will continue to request marriage licenses in Asheville, NC through October 14, 2011. Stay tuned for an update and photos from tomorrow’s action.
