Today, Cindy and Laura successfully recorded their legal California marriage license at the Buncombe County Register of Deeds Office as part of the WE DO Campaign. Legally married since 2008, the couple’s marriage is not recognized in North Carolina because of an unjust state law. Beyond being in love, the couple’s motivation for wanting to have their marriage recognized in North Carolina – and all fifty states – is to help protect their young daughter and to ensure the security of their family.
Another couple, Jerri and Susan, also took part in the campaign today, requesting – and being denied – a marriage license. Both couples were joined by over fifteen supporters, including Rev. Shannon Spencer of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Rev. Lisa Kemper of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville.
