In day five of the We Do Campaign, four couples requested – and were denied – marriage license. Today marked the first day that male couples participated in the campaign. Matt and Shannon were joined by their son and daughter. Three other couples – John and Sean, Ryan and Will, and Kadee and Ashley – were also denied licenses. Kadee and Ashley were joined by their newborn daughter.
A group of over 25 people provided support to the four couples. The support team was comprised of community members and clergy, including Asheville City Council Member Cecil Bothwell, Rev. Brian Cole of All Souls Cathedral, Rev. Shannon Spencer of First Congregational United Church of Christ, and Rev. Lisa Kemper of Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville.
Since the We Do Campaign launched on October 3, 13 couples have been denied licenses. LGBT couples will continue to request marriage licenses in Asheville, NC through October 14, 2011. The next action is scheduled for Tuesday, October 11 – National Coming Out Day.
