“A West Ashley couple spent Thursday morning in Probate court downtown, trying to apply for a marriage license. The young women, of course, walked out still un-wed thanks to South Carolina law. Even though the women knew they were going to be denied, Maddy Trilling, a law school student at Charleston School of Law, says it still hurt. “We were very aware of the fact that the judge was going to say, we don’t recognize your love in South Carolina but it’s just another thing to have someone say that to you…to hear someone verbalize that even though you know that is coming.”
