In this article, the Asheville Citizen-Times reports on what marriage equality in New York means for North Carolina:
” . . .New York’s move to allow same-sex marriage probably won’t be duplicated in North Carolina, advocates say, though it could help defeat a proposed constitutional ban. A bill in the state House would amend the state Constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and woman.
“We are very, very hopeful that even in this conservative environment, we will be able to fight it off,” said Jen Jones, communications director for Equality NC in Raleigh, which supports equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people . . .
Locally, advocates say the move in New York brings hope.“I think it carries a very powerful message that the country is really shifting on marriage equality, and I think that is something that resonates in North Carolina and in Asheville,” said Jasmine Beach-Ferrara, executive director of the Campaign for Southern Equality.”
