Thanks to North Carolinians like the Schafer family, who have been pushing toward LGBTQ protections since the harmful HB2 bill, the fight for lived and legal equality in NC has more momentum than ever.
Fans of HBO’s Euphoria of course know the actress Hunter Schafer – but they may not know that Hunter, along with her parents Mac and Katy Schafer, were plaintiffs in the ACLU’s case against the discriminatory law known as the “bathroom bill” in 2016. Now that key provisions of the law have expired, Mac and Katy reflect on the five-year anniversary of HB2 in North Carolina and the need for protections on the federal level. Watch the latest NC is Ready video here:
This video debuted in an op-ed that Mac Schafer wrote for People magazine a few weeks ago! If you haven’t read the op-ed yet, click here to read why Mac, a pastor, father, and North Carolinian, is calling for LGBTQ-inclusive nondiscrimination ordinances statewide.
Through NC Is Ready, Equality NC and the Campaign for Southern Equality have joined with community members in our collective need for comprehensive protections for LGBTQ individuals in North Carolina, because it is fundamental to our wellbeing. With support from the Schafers and leaders like you, we can make sure that #NCIsReady to help cities, towns, and counties pass LGBTQ-inclusive nondiscrimination ordinances at the state and federal level.
We can continue the momentum by joining Mac and Katy in speaking out for LGBTQ+ equality and against anti-trans discrimination.
