In Idaho, HB71, a law that prohibits best-practice medical care for transgender people under the age of 18; including hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and surgery is currently in effect. Litigation remains ongoing.
Youth can still access mental health care, which is not restricted or banned by this law. Youth and their families may also travel to access care in other states where gender-affirming care has not been restricted.
Additionally, Idaho has passed HB668, a policy that prohibits any public funds from being used to pay for gender-affirming healthcare for patients of any age. This means that state-sponsored insurance programs, including Idaho’s Medicaid insurance program and government employee insurance, cannot be used to help cover the cost of gender-affirming care; including surgery, hormone therapy, and puberty blockers. It also means that hospitals that receive state funding can no longer provide gender-affirming care to patients of any age. This law took effect July 1, 2024 but portions of it were blocked for plaintiffs in a legal challenge on the same day.
