Tonight there was a rainbow around the moon.
And I don’t mean a dinky one, that you have to squint to imagine it’s
real.
This one was full-spectrum, deep and bright.
The true ROYGBIV experience.
My friend, who we share land with, texted me at bedtime because ze
saw it, and we had to come see it for ourselves.
So up we got, Turtle and I (that’s our three-legged dog – yes we got a
dog!) and traipsed out into the darkness to see for ourselves the
brilliant occurrence.
I yelled over to our friend and said, “We live on a planet where we can
see rainbows around the moon. Can you even believe it?”
And it’s true, we do.
On the land we stay on, the ground glows.
I know you think I’m exaggerating, but I’m not.
Tiny, blue, pulsing, iridescent specks dot the landscape.
If you’re not paying attention, they’re easy to miss.
But we don’t miss them.
They’re baby blue ghost fireflies, and they live on the ground.
They glow every night right under our feet.
And they get even brighter after a big rain.
The beauty of these beings is that they ask us not to work too hard.
Yard work actually makes it more difficult for them to survive.
Imagine that we live in a place that begs us to rest!
I know growing up we spent all our time staying busy with school and
activities, but we’re learning and practicing rest these days.
And it feels really, really good.
Okay, but you’ll never guess what work we do.
(Really, I don’t think you will.)
We’re a primary care PA!
Yep. We help take care of our queer and trans community.
We get to show up for people: listen, trust their experiences, and help
them heal.
I know we didn’t get that growing up.
I’m still really sorry about that.
We survive though, and we heal.
We’re still healing.
And you know what?
All those tough experiences make us really great at our work.
We love showing up for people, and guess what?
People love us too.
They really do.
And now, as we’re writing this, there are two barred owls calling to
each other in the distance.
”Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you allllll?” they say.
We never really learned to cook very well ourselves, but we manage.
We’ve learned to access the support we need to help us thrive in this
life.
Support! Can you believe it?
We have support. (Wild, I know.)
Life’s still not easy, but these days it’s full of joyful, passionate, and
silly moments.
Sometimes we find them all by ourselves, but usually they are found
with one (or several) of our many good friends.
Yep, we finally got those too!
So, in case nobody’s told you lately kiddo,
I love you.
You’re safe now.
You’re not alone.
You don’t have to worry anymore.
Turtle and I (and all our friends) got you.
It keeps getting better.
I pinky promise.
And don’t ever forget, there are rainbows around the moon.
